Upcycling

What is upcycling?

“Reuse (discarded objects or material) in such a way as to create a product of higher quality or value than the original”.

-Oxford Dictionary

At Metamorphic Gear:

We transform used boat sails, truck tarps and climbing ropes into eco-friendly and stylish accessories. We give these unwanted materials a new lease on life and benefit the environment while doing so!

Upcycling a Plastic Bottle:

The steps are simple and you can do it at home! You only need to clean the bottles then pick your creative projects. For instance, self-watering bottle garden, plastic bottle bird feeder, plastic bottle sprinkler, etc.

As you can see, Upcycling requires way less energy, while creating more utility for the old material and demanding less new materials.

Recycling involves the industrial process of waste destruction, turning it into recycled material before manufacturing it into a product; whereas, upcycling neither requires the additional step of breaking down the materials nor loses the quality of raw materials in order to repurpose existing materials.

Recycling a Plastic Bottle:

There are numerous steps that go into recycling a plastic bottle. It starts by collecting the plastic bottles, sorting the bottles by plastic type, cleaning the bottles, shredding the bottles into flakes, melting down the bottles, turning them into small pallets, selling the plastic pallets to manufacturers where they will then finally turn these pallets into new products.

How to start upcycling?

1. Start simple like reusing the glass food jars that you purchase from the supermarket. Try reuse the jars instead of recycling them. Try washing them out and storing food instead of buying plastic storage containers.

2. Try to find easy ways to add upcycling into your daily life.
